As a SOMA resident I’d say this about sums it up.
Hi, I'm the Christian anon from atheistinspiration that said the thing about Bible contradictions. This is in response to the alleged contradiction you brought up about whether Jesus was executed before or after the Passover meal. I really want to thank you for inviting a dialogue about it instead of resorting to mindless ad hominem. Here's what I'd say, in brief (kinda).
The Passover was actually a 2-day event (Numbers 9:1-4) that was collectively referred to as the Passover (Luke 22:1) [also note in Jewish culture days began in the evening]. This Passover was special because the second day of the Passover also happened to be the Sabbath. The Passover feast was to be celebrated on the second day of the Passover (Numbers 9:1-4 again). Yet it is clearly indicated that for some unknown reason Jesus and his disciples ate the Passover meal one night early (John 19:14, 31, 42; Luke 23:54; Mark 14:12 all refer to the meal taking place on the "Day of Preparation," i.e. the day before the Sabbath--one night early). The crucifixion took place later that same day (in the morning, since days start with evening) after they had already eaten the Passover meal. The link you gave cites John 19:14-16 as contradicting with these facts, saying that Jesus was crucified during the PREPARATION for the Passover meal. He was. Other people were preparing for the Passover which would occur later that night, while Jesus and his disciples had already eaten it. The Bible doesn't contradict itself--it clearly states that they ate the meal early, and then John goes on to tell what everyone ELSE was doing a day later, which indeed does seem like a contradiction without a clear grip on how long the Passover was and what terms like Day of Preparation mean, which takes a little digging.
See http://www.friktech.com/rel/passover.htm for many more details.
Many "contradictions" appear in the Gospels, because we have up to four tellings of the same story sometimes. These four individual authors, writing to four distinct audiences, coming from four distinct backgrounds, sometimes focus on different things, word things differently, or assume we understand something about the culture at the time that we often do not anymore, 2000 years later. Thus they can appear to contradict, but (I would argue) this is always due to a faulty or superficial understanding on our part, not an error on theirs.
Again, thanks for inviting a discussion, and I'd be happy to keep it going in whatever way, if you'd like.
I really wish I had the time to do this discussion justice, but I really don’t feel I do. Here’s a video that answers all the claims you’ve made here, as far as I can see. Hope this isn’t too much of a disappointment, but I have other obligations and really am not all that terribly concerned as to what you end up believing.
Got a text from mom…
Usama bin Laden is dead!!!
My only regret is that it happened on Obama’s watch!!!
How are Republicans gonna say Obama is soft on terror now with a straight face?
When are you? & How are you?
